Training Day 20: Madera one last time.

Distance: 55 miles Average: 10.5

Note to self: Eat More Often. I can feel myself losing fat and gaining muscle, and I’m still not eating enough. Today I had (omitting dinner):

  • 1 bowl oatmeal
  • 2 cups coffee
  • 1 peanut butter and honey sandwich
  • 1 orange
  • 1 chicken salad wrap with olives and artichokes
  • some granola

And I ran out of energy (ie: ‘bonked’) near the top of the final grueling hill. The key seems to be timing. I had been riding for two hours without any nourishment. When I took a break an hour back I should have eaten. Instead I just rested and paid the price later.

My brain was like, “I ate an hour ago.” But then my body couldn’t hack it. I gave it some granola and within 15 minutes I was spinning at a good rhythym again. So today was a pretty good day. Made good time. Scared a deer. Mooed at some cows.
