Total Distance: 73miles Average distance: 10.8mph
Today has gone pretty badly. After about 70 miles of nothing but headwind, I get to the hotel and they didn’t let me get a room. Apparently you need a driver’s license in order to rent a room. Like who gives a fuck? So the petty dipshit at Best Western didn’t let me in. I’m currently writing this in a Denny’s next to the hotel.
Things have gotten pretty out of control with checking IDs here in the US. This is the kind of bullshit that make me want to move back to England. Its like “OMG, how would society function without ID cards?” Well, I’ll tell you: It would function almost exaxctlyy as it does right now, wubt without ID cards! Would kids by beer and drink tho? Yep, but they do that now anyway! Would terrorists stay in hotels? Yep, but they wouldn’t have to make fake ID cards! Yes, the world would be an extremely similar place, but without this stupid artificial barrier!
So anyway, the ride. The ride was sheer punishment. There was very little approaching enjoyment. I feel like the wind was really similar to that ‘chinese water torture’. After the 9th non-stop hour of the wind pushing on your body you start to really lose your will to live. Unfortunately the wind also got worse over the course of the day. I was going a pitiful 7mph after the 70th consecutive mile of headwind.
I guess that adage, “Whatever does not kill you, makes you stronger” is true here. I should expect some amazing adventure and also learn to handle amazing dissapointment.
[After writing this at the Denny’s I was able to bike over to a friend’s house and spend the night there.]
