Day 13: Carter’s Landing

Distance: 65 avg: 11.6

We camped away from the road mostly hidden from view. We woke to bright sunshine, the first such morning in a while. It was very welcome and we spread our gear out to maximize drying time.

Today’s stops included Richland, Halfway( yep, that’s the name of the town), and Hell’s Canyon.

In Richland I went ahead and plopped down $35 and bought a fishing rod and gear. Tomorrow is a rest day, and yet again I’ll be attempting to catch some dinner. This area is crawling with a fish called, no joke, ‘crappie’. It’s pronounced ‘krahpee’ apparently. I shall use my training from Wally wisely.

We had some great chow and chat in Richland, and then continued on. John is getting used to the idea of ‘drafting’ and so we made a bit better time. While I’m not much faster it seems I have more endurance. It seems to work where I pull and he drafts. We tried alternating but I think that was too much too soon. This will get us some extra miles when the wind’s in our(my) face.

We made camp here about 3 miles from the Idaho border. I’m so excited, my first state down! I would probably just go across…but my fishing license is only good on the Oregon side of the river! 🙂
