Day 43: Sugar City

Distance: 58 avg: 16.4

Yes that average is correct. Today I lucked out on some massive tailwind. I checked out of my hotel late, biked to Sugar City, and I still had an afternoon to kill. I entertained biking further but the math didn’t look appealing. I then remembered that this weekend there was no license needed for fishing! And I was next to two lakes!

I biked against the wind to lake Henry. Turns out fish do not like wind as much as people. No bites, no nibbles.

A guy I met gave me a new technique for fishing: use a small bobber on the other side of the sinkers, to hold my bait a foot or so above the lake bottom. I think the wind churned up so much gunk my bait was lost in murky water. I wouldve switched to baiting near the top, but the wind changed direction. Time to go!

I’m in a city park, shielded by a big antique Union Pacific traincar. This is working out great to stop the wind. Seems like I’m getting close to Kansas. Time to get moving super early!

  1. Chris… quit lake fishing. B-O-R-I-N-G. Find a creek or river and fish there. Look for the pockets after the fast water meets the slow water (imagine areas where the fish can sit and wait for food to swim by) and shadowed areas. The fish will be there. Just cast and let your bait flow down river past these areas. Keep casting… keep your slack up and wait for a bite. Super fun and fast to fish in… :o) Dont get too close to the edge of the river if the water is clear because the fish WILL see you. Dont underestimate the brains of a fish… okay, they’re dumb. But they will see you. And if it’s a windy creek or river, you’ll want to be on the inside of the bend every time… have fun!!!

  2. and that’s a windy river as in winding not windy as in blowing air… he he.

Hehe. I will try that fisherwoman Jen! I have not been able to fish in streams because the water has been raging from storm and snow runoff. Now it looks like Kansas doesn’t even have rivers! :O
