Day 67: Golconda

Distance: 75 avg: ???

If there are any Turners reading this, yes, I am in Golconda of all places! When I was a kid I went and visited Uncle Larry’s popcorn farm down here in Golconda. I honestly don’t remember much except watching baby chicks in the yard, and uncle Larry catching me getting some count chocula for a midnight snack.

I’m at a very secluded campground outside Golconda. Tomorrow I’m going to head into town and get some breakfast and take some photos. Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of corn farms and red barns. 🙂

Last night’s hotel room was horrible. I’m sitting here in clothes that reek of cigarette smoke from a hotel room with shared ventilation and a couple human chimneys next door. I barely slept. Loud, bad air conditioning, smelly, dirty. The worst hotel I’ve ever seen. I almost left, and really should have.

Due to the hotel and general wear’n’tear today’s biking moved pretty slowly. But it was still fantastic because the weather, roads, and traffic were all great. Cloud cover kept the temp down, and there were lots of hills to keep things interesting.

I also hit a new max speed: 44.1! Pretty crazy! I wonder if those steep Appalachian mountains can top that.

And just like that, in 20 miles I’ll be out of Illinois. I get to ride a ferry over the Ohio river into Kentucky! I’m going to Sebree, which has a legendary church which almost every cyclist mentions I must stay at.

I hope I can make it. I’m pretty exhausted! These hills are fun but tiring. My knee is barking at me a bit. I ate a box of mac ‘n cheese and a bunch of oreos. I hope that shuts it up. Getting up bright and early tomorrow for a solid 80 miles of cycling.
