Day 68: Sebree

Distance: 81 avg: 11.5

Today I took a ferry into Kentucky! Such a brief time spent in Illinois. As soon as I entered Kentucky I was welcomed by a Kentucky Ambassador, and given some chewing tobacco and a bucket of chicken. Later I was duelling fiddles with a baptist preacher. I was close to winning when a group of dogs came and attacked us. I bashed the violin on their heads and biked out of there. Unfortunately I biked right into a cornbread bakeoff, directly into a giant vat of sorghum. Mmmm…sorghum.

Today’s biking out of Golconda was nice. I biked over to the city proper and took a lot of pictures for the fam. Afterwards it was time to make that last big push before my rest day.

The night in Murphysboro, even though it was in a hotel, was horrible and effected my cycling. Golconda’s campground was so peaceful and serene! I slept in, and got a fantastic extra hour of sleep in. I think this really helped make the day go smoother.

In Sebree there is a baptist church that takes in cyclists. I biked in right when they were having dinner. 🙂 I got off my bike and walked over to a fantastic dinner. Violet is an amazing cook. There was a great variety and depth to her cooking that is sadly rare.

As for the church, it’s truly impressive. Almost every cyclist mentions this as a must-stay spot. There is a lot of space, and very relaxing. Another cyclist is here, too, Craig. He is an interesting fellow, and also the same age as me. We seem to have a lot in common to talk about.

I’m looking forward to relaxing here and working a bit on Mustaches tomorrow. This church is exactly what I needed after the last six days of cycling!
