Virginia continues to be an interesting and great ride. The hills aren’t too crazy, just enough to stay interesting. I’m currently staying in a shed behind the general store in Catawba. Its actually much nicer than it sounds. The princely sum I paid was $3. I’ve paid more for places without electricity.
I’ve been joined by Daniel, who has come from a farm outside Frankfurt, Germany. He is having a great time. He is learning a lot about how different America is to Germany. We had a good talk about our journeys. He is surprised by the conservative aspect of America. He finds it strange that so many people would want to vote Republican. I’ve been thinking more about small town America and have to boil it down to religion, a homogenous culture, and fox news. It’s environmental, and most people just go with the flow.
I am officially on my last map! I’m down to about 330 miles. I have worked it out to completing on the 21st. My flight is on the 26th and I’m looking at moving that to the 24th so I don’t impose on Ryan’s dad for too long. And then I’m home! And then…I’m off to go surfing in Mexico! Paola found a nice house literally on the ocean in Baja and I’m going to go learn to surf and write an xbox game. The adventure never ends!

What’s the expression? To be a liberal at 20 shows you have heart, to be a conservative at 30 shows you have brain. :p
I’m pretty much 180° on my financial views of the world compared to when I was 20. But that doesn’t mean I started hating gays and passing out bibles at the mall.
I know you’ve had a lot of time to think about things on your trip, but you still seem to have a very narrow view of conservatives.
WE ARE PLANNING TO HAVE A FAMILY DINNER SUNDAY 8/2 . WOW WHAT A FAMILY WE HAVE NOW. THEN YOU ARE OFF AGAIN.Hum: conservatism.People who want things to stay the same. Vs Liberalism, People who want things to change. Is there a Middle of the roadism, People who want the good things to stay and the bad things to change to be good. Oh,
Now someone need to say what is good and what is bad. So we elected Obama? I need more space to comment more! Stay safe Love XXXOOOMOM
You mean the 24th, right? Because I changed your ticket…
The 24th and I’ll be back with ya, cutes!
I think you don’t need more space, but your own blog. 😉
Hehe, but I’m still friends with you! 🙂 I don’t know that I necessarily have a narrow view of conservatives. There is a broad spectrum from the Becks to the Huckabees. I agree with some bits and not with others. What I’d probably say are the issues with conservative media is the crazy sensationalism. This drives fear and panic which manifests in an us vs. them mentality. Religion has a similar impact, but I don’t know if there is a correlation/causal relationship. You combine the two and add a homogenous culture and you have small town America politics in a nutshell.
But I’m a liberal intellectual elitist. 🙂
Now to put this more into perspective: I don’t think this is representative of small town American life. People in small town America don’t seem to really care about politics. There are moral leaders of the community and they dictate the belief system. This has little effect on day to day life.
Anyway, I’m not entirely sure what it is that I wrote that sparked your comment. Perhaps this’ll provide some answers/food for thought.
