Day 85: Mineral

Distance: 56 avg: 12.2

A short day, due to the limited places to overnight in Virginia. I have a 48-mile stretch to the next town. The miles are pretty smooth, I could probably clear a 100-miler. But I might as well enjoy these last days.

I’m finding myself noticing the last of things. The last page of my map. The last time I need to buy fresh fruit. Tomorrow will be my last night in a tent.

And tonight I watched as a couple guys set up their tent for the first time. It was kind of funny, and reminded me of my first nights. They painstakingly put the rods in, put on the fly, and even guyed it. And no groundsheet. I did pretty much the same thing in training. Now I don’t even stake my tent, or put the fly up most of the time! I’ve learned a lot on this trip, and I’m sure they will learn the same tricks as they go.

Virginia is nice! Something I noticed…black people! It’s been so vanilla most of my journey. Good to see some diversity.

The roads are great. The route is even marked. The hills have been winding down. It feels like the denoument, with a soft, coasting ending. Which is good because my body seems to be telling me to cut it out. I took a spontaneous nap in my tent tonight. That’s new. I think it’s time to wrap this up!
