Woooooo
Hooooooo!!!
I’m dooooone! Yes, I have finished biking across the country! Some statistics:
4200 miles biked along the Transamerican trail.
An average of 48 miles a day.
Including training I biked 5690 miles since April.
236.5 dog attacks thwarted.
5 bajillion calories eaten.
I broke camp, and headed out to finish my journey. I was in a very good mood! I felt like pushing it, and Corey’s comment to finish strong was in my mind. I pushed pretty hard and kept a good pace, trying to stay up at the 20 mph mark.
I was lucky to have a couple bike trails for short periods of the day. The traffic was allright. The weather stayed dry and cool.
It turns out that Jamestown, the first ever settlement from Europe, was on the route(kinda)! I went and checked it out, taking in some history. I enjoyed myself and took the expected boring photos.
I spent a lot of time in Jamestown, and realized I’d probably not finish today if I kept stopping in Williamsburg and Yorktown. And so I rode right through Williamsburg.
Now in the heart of Williamsburg is a giant re-creation of a colonial village. They have 500 reconstructed period buildings. The transam route goes directly through them too. So I dodged blacksmiths, buggies and carriages, ladies and lords, and all the tourists that surrounded them. It was a bit sad to have to beeline through what looked like a really fun time. But I was determined to wrap it up!
And so i made it into Yorktown soon after, which has it’s own thriving tourism industry. People lounged on the beach and shopped at boutiques. And again I just zoomed past.
And there I was, at the end of the tour, standing before the Yorktown Victory Monument! This was the end of my map. I stood there, at a loss of what to do next. I had obeyed the map for so long…what now?
I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, and release. I had finished this crazy thing that I had set out to do. I had ridden through snow, heat, rain, wind, and made it. I basked in my accomplishment for a bit. I read the sides of the monument, and relaxed. I was, and am, elated that I had done it!

That’s awesome Chris. Much congrats.
Congrats! That’s great! Just 87 days until you make it to back to the West coast! Or do you think that it’ll be shorter, now that you know the route?
Yeah, it’ll only be 87 days til….hey wait! Is this a ploy to keep me from crashing tfug? Did you find out that I’m actually Bexley Hall?
Thank you sir! Been a long time, hope life’s good wherever you are. Which is probably playing xbox with Jordan. 🙂 and congratulations on being the first with an actual icon. 🙂
Yaaaaaay! I’m almost home cutes!
Hey Kay! Thanks a lot! I hear you are leaving the TL! I’ll miss ya! Good luck on your new adventures!
Ty 😀 I’ll see ya in phx soon!
But then I’d have to go back through Wyoming! 😉 glad you’ve enjoyed the blog and just like all good tv shows, it must come to an end before it dies in a horrible time slot. Or something like that.
Just finished a Molson Canadian, which is making my spelling more challenging. And if you’re curious it’s perfectly legal to drink and bicycle! Woohoo!
I’m with Jordan. I need you to keep going so I have something to read daily!! :o)
CONGRATS!!
Wow, grats! I still can’t imagine what completing such a monumental task must be like!
I can’t wait to hear more about it! CBS?
Chris. I’m completely ecstatic right along side you over your accomplishment. Huge smiles on my face for you 🙂
I feel like one those people standing on the sidelines, that when you go zooming by I want to be saying something like, “I know him! That’s my friend!”, making sure everyone in ear shot knows we are connected some how. As if knowing you somehow makes me a little bit cooler, and makes them all jealous 🙂
Just WOW dude. Awesome. I’m swelling with joy for you 🙂
robin
Well, he *has* been asking a lot of questions about how to build a perfectly frictionless bike!
Great job Chris!!!!
Haha, thanks jen! I wish I could keep going, but I think it’s time to get some rest! 🙂
CBS for sure! I’ll see you soon!
Wow robin! I don’t know what to say! Except that here I am living in AZ and you got your wish to live in Chi-town. I remember when we lived together and I was all about getting the fuck out of Phoenix. Now you’re out there and I’m back here! 🙁 hopefully someday we can meet up beyond a 5 & Diner and go biking or something.
Ty, Ty. 🙂 I finished strong!
