Day 88: Poquoson

Yesterday after completing my tour I biked down to Poquoson, a town about 10 miles south of Yorktown where my friend Ryan’s parents Jim and Eileen live. Jim and Ryan both worked across the river here at the NASA Langley Research Center, and Jim found a beautiful piece of land nearby and built a very nice house on it. It’s right on the water, which made me want to go fishing.

Jim was kind enough to oblige so we trampled through the brush through some kind of fiddler crab metropolis and made it to his dock. Now I didn’t catch a fish, but me and Jim caught a crab! This was an entirely new concept to me. Crabs won’t let go of the bait on a line, so they’ll hold on til they see you and then let go and swim away. But if you put a net in the water you can grab them before they see you! And so I held the net and grabbed the crab with it! It was pretty exciting for me, and kind of cooler to catch than a fish!

After fishing we did some shopping chores, and dropped off my bike to get packed at the bike shop.

I am trying my best to not eat like I did before, but it’s hard. I was eating 6000-8000 calories a day, and now I’ve got to get back down to 2500 or I’ll balloon up! So I’m perpetually hungry! 🙁

So we went out to dinner and had a good time, chatting about all kinds of stuff. We also stopped near the air force base and watched the fighter jets that patrol the coast. You could get super close to them, pretty impressive!

So I’m still having a great time, even though I’m a bit sad that it’s in a car! 😉

Just came across your blog. Struck a dear nerve with me. I’m 61 and plan on retiring in about 4-5 years with a life long goal of biking across America. Hope I’m not to feeble when the time comes.

    Envy your experience!

My best to you as you reflect on your amazing journey!

Hi bud! Thanks for your comments on this blog! I think it doesn’t matter what your age is, a lot of people make it across the country doing 40-50 miles a day! Good luck and I hope that you can realize your dream soon!
