Tucson lawyer Erik Ryberg has posted that the new Arizona Driver’s Manual now includes updated messaging regarding the laws for cyclists and motorists. There are a lot of laws that motorists are not aware of very specifically mentioned such as:
- Motorists should give cyclists three feet when passing.
- Cyclists are allowed to ride in the road, and may take the lane if there is not enough room in the lane for a bike and a car.
- It is legal for cyclists to ride two abreast.
Erik’s blog sometimes reads like a laundry list of discrimination against cyclists. Regardless of the majority of law-abiding drivers, whether its through ignorance or aggression, bad things happen to us bikers. Cops will ticket us for things they believe to be illegal. People will push cyclists off their bikes for fun. I’ve probably had every possible curse word yelled at me while biking. And yet somehow at the end of the day its my fault, either because my lights aren’t bright enough, or I took the lane to avoid a potential crash.
So I’ve taken this page, and I’ve made a couple images of it, and I will be keeping it on my phone. And its also here if anyone else wants it.
