Gamifying Decrapifying: Week 3

As the minimalist game continues, the ability to find things to declutter hasn’t increased in difficulty, but the amount of time decluttering has increased. I’m finding categories of objects and realizing that I have, say, 5 computer mice and a number of cycling sleeves, and trying my best to figure out which to keep and which to get rid of.

My partner has really gotten into this as well, and in true Paola fashion she was skeptical and hesitant in the beginning, but has truly embraced it. Yesterday she spent the entire morning in the garden resetting her potted plants to be the ‘special ones’. This isn’t part of the game, but in addition to, and was certainly inspired by it! I appreciate how this is making us more observant and mindful of the stuff that surrounds us.

Day 15

  • A board game from a kickstarter I have never played (sorry matt!).
  • A chair catalog
  • Some old carpet padding.
  • A massage roller.
  • two old belts that probably came with some shorts.
  • An old mug.
  • 6 old credit cards.
  • 2 more old check books

Day 16

  • 2 old cycling jerseys.
  • 1 old black shirt
  • 2 pieces of foamcore.
  • 1 old picture frame
  • 8 beer cozies, including 5 from my neighbor who wanted to make and sell these ‘sofa king’ cozies but ended up with a bunch and was giving them away. 😀

Day 17

  • An old samsung tv.
  • 6 pieces of damaged foamcore
  • 50 old business cards. I felt like this was bit of cheating so I figured I’d just call this the rest of my day 17…but…

Yep, I screwed up and when we returned from travel, I did day 17 again like a dufus.

  • 6 18650 batteries, mostly dead.
  • 1 Spellslingers swag battery pack.
  • an old 18650 battery pack for use for 12v dc power or usb.
  • 6 USB cables.
  • An old pair of cycling shoes.
  • A couple locomotive teamsters keychains.

Day 18

  • Various usb cables and wall warts (aka dc power plugs). I have a lot more than this! But I culled the weaker and smaller of the herd.
  • A number of specialty cables including a car antenna extension cable, a VGA cable, a usb power tester (i have better ones than this)

Day 19

Even more usb cables! Anything you buy comes with these things and they are mainly terrible quality.

Day 20

  • 3 cans expired food
  • more usb cables!
  • two heat shrink label maker cartridges that don’t fit my label maker
  • PuzzleCraft – a fun book about making puzzles
  • Game Engine Architecture: 3rd Edition – A great textbook, and much is still relevant. If you need to know the math on how to skin a mesh or do Inverse Kinematics, this is a great reference. Surprising how difficult it is to find deep knowledge like this on the net.
  • 1 old cycling bib i never really liked.
  • My old worn-out Pearl Izumi cold-weather gloves. These are my fave cold weather gloves, but alas, they are pretty trashed and its time to replace them.
  • 5 pairs cycling socks.
  • 1 pair worn out cycling shoe toe covers.

Day 21

  • Even more cooking oil!
  • A broken pair of headphones i was keeping to fix ‘some day’
  • 1 old cable modem from a house I no longer own.
  • A square credit card reader I used to collect pizza money from board game night a while back.
  • A bose speaker remote with a broken battery cover (it was actually cheaper to replace the whole remote)
  • One Nintendo switch battery pack.
  • 2 wide-angle web cams from a contract gig a while back.
  • 1 cheap mouse from my in-laws
  • 1 cycling sleeve, other missing
  • 1 broken heart rate monitor strap
  • 1 pair old cycling gloves
  • 2 pairs cycling socks
  • 2 pairs cycling sleeves
  • 1 cycling sock
  • 1 pair uncomfortable long johns
  • 1 ‘Arizona’ cycling jersey.
  • 1 cycling bib from my old team
  • 1 casquette (cycling hat)

Bonus Pics

I was able to get rid of a lot of cycling gear in the last couple days. Here’s a bit of a before and after:

I have a lot of usb cables, and cables in general. I was surprised at how they’ve accumulated. It was nice to reduce the number of cables.

I keep my cables in my ‘man-closet’ with pictures of the adapter types on the front so I can remember which type is which lol. You can tell how empty these are compared to how they used to be.

Tune in next week for more decrapifying!
