Last year we listened to a NY Times podcast about air conditioning. I was waiting for this podcast to talk about the insane amount of energy required during winter to heat the homes of most of America. To my surprise, heating was not mentioned. Well not that shocked, I don’t expect unbiased reporting from NYT.
Anyway the term for this coined by solarshades phenomena is ‘thermochauvinism’. I also enjoy the term ‘overcooling’, which is why I bring a jacket with me when I visit Phoenix in the summer. If I do some mild Phoenix bashing does that make me a thermochauvinist as well? And perhaps another interesting term is ‘thermocolonialism’ with the expectation that four seasons is the correct and right number.
The article also cited an Ursula Le Guin short/paper/opinion called The Carrier Bag of Fiction, explaining how we as a culture define the value of culture, technology, heroism, and more. It also gives great depth to her unique perspective to writing, and why she is such an important voice.
