Day 1: Astoria
Here I am in Astoria, or as I prefer to call it, “The home of The Goonies”. They love their seafood btw: I was supposed to be on the road right now, but I’m having some mechanical trouble.

Boxing it up.
Tomorrow I leave for Portland, so its time to pack and clean. And put music on my ipod. And get the landscaping worked out. And hopefully tonight have one last dinner with my friends. 😀

Training Day 20: Madera one last time.
Distance: 55 miles Average: 10.5 Note to self: Eat More Often. I can feel myself losing fat and gaining muscle, and I’m still not eating enough. Today I had (omitting dinner): 1 bowl oatmeal 2 cups coffee 1 peanut butter and honey sandwich 1 orange 1 chicken salad wrap with olives and artichokes some granola…

Training day 16: picacho campground
Distance 53 average 11.9 I feel like I’ve been living in the camping dark ages. This gear I bought yesterday shedded 10-15 pounds off my load! And it’s better gear! And it’s smaller! This morning I did a repack, and put in some new gear. I was able to pick up a new sleeping bag…

Training Day 18: Zooooom!
Distance: 72 miles average 12.6 Today I remembered what it’s like to ride without a lot of wind. I was able to get a lot of miles in without too mch trouble. No exciting destinations today, just my mom’s house and saguaro national park. It’s exciting because I did the whole day without much discomfort…

Training day 17: Ostriches and buffaloes
Distance 58.5 average 12.1 Yesterday was some kind of ‘over the hump’ day where I biked a solid (almost) 60 without too much trouble. The first 8 miles I was sandpapered with a mild headwind but went and checked out Rooster Cogburn’s Ostrich Ranch. Ostriches are like big prehistoric chickens. Big, dumb and hungry. I’d…

Training Day 14: Wind, wind, and more wind.
Distance: 53 miles Average: 9.9mph Today had some pretty intense 18mph winds. If you were wondering, even if you have an amazing downhill, it is nothing compared to a headwind. I was pedaling pretty intensely in order to maintain 8-10mph on a downhill. And so even with a ~2000-3000 ft elevation loss, my average was…

Training Day 13: Peppersauce Campground
Distance: 55 miles. Average: 10.7mph So it is entirely possible to bike to Peppersauce Campground! And so here I am, sitting watching something like 15 hawks zig-zag across the sky. I tried getting them to come over here by offering chili, they’re not fans.

Glovetans are sexy.
I’m just chilling out at catalina state park and thought I better show off my awesome tan. Notice on my supercool glovetan I have a little dot where the hole in the glove is.
