Day 21: Hamilton

Distance: 45 avg: 13.3

Yesterday I neglected to mention my cycling gear got melted to the side of a dryer. The temperature control was broken and it basicallly ruined a good amount of my gear. I was pulling my melted booties off my jacket.

Important lesson: cyclists, don’t trust laundromat dryers! Or any dryer! Check it after a couple minutes. I only had my stuff in there for 20 minutes.

I was able to salvage my shorts, my arms and legs, and one shirt. So today involved re-buying my gear. I think I got on the road about 4.

I broke it to John today that I wanted to go at my own pace. I was a bit worried he may take offense but he was fine and we went our separate ways.

Naturally we kept running into each other but that’s what happens when you’re both going in the same direction. So I stop and look back, and I see a cyclist who’s not john! I thought I was seeing things.

I met Richard from St. Louis and we chatted for a bit. I mentioned that I thought he was someone else and told him about john. He told me that he preferred not to buddy up, he wants to go his pace. I think I’ve learned an important touring lesson.

Richard works modifying corn genetically(all you gm-haters go eat dirt). It’s pretty cool stuff, and he’s an interesting guy. He’s off to Denver, and perhaps I’ll run into him again soon!
